Under the guidance of a design manager at TACTILE, I led the design effort for GENIE Tech Pro Link handheld diagnostic tool. I worked closely with GENIE’s program managers and mechanical engineers to meet all product requirements and optimize engineering features to meet strict drop and IP requirements.

Scope of work included: user research, architecture & form exploration, CMF study, usability & ergonomic study, and engineering support. Launched on October 2017.

GENIE manufactures lifts and platforms used in construction, maintenance, warehouse stocking, and equipment installation. They produce machines that set the industry standard for quality, reliability, and safety; those values are the cornerstones of Genie’s brand legacy.

During the development of this product, we frequently visited yard sites to test our ideas and prototypes to gain valuable customer insights. During one specific visit, an operator walked us through his normal routine which led us to the idea to imbed a magnet in the back of the device as well as incorporate not one but two lanyard attachments.

I worked with engineering to strategically place ribs and bosses around the perimeter of the housing to 1) minimize the bulk and dead space around the 4” display and PCB, 2) maintain a reasonable size handle for hands of all sizes, and 3) achieve IPx4 water-resistant and Mil-STD-810 shock/drop rating.

We designed the Tech Pro Link to reflect GENIE’s new visual brand language, taking design cues from the lifts that the device will service. A large display, simple UI, rugged body, and ergonomic handle convey that the device is capable and trustworthy, values that are paramount to GENIE’s brand. The handheld device is equipped with a mini-USB ports for charging or for downloading software updates. A magnet on the back of the device enables service technicians to work hands-free while still accessing the needed data. A ridge, that comfortably nests between the index and middle finger, was carefully sculpted into the handle to prevent the device from rocking or tipping when placed on a flat service. We also designed in a flashlight, providing additional light for working in poorly lit environments. A lanyard clip is located on both ends of the device for hanging from a railing or securing on to one’s wrist. Its compact design allows it to fit in a user’s back pocket or tool belt. The body is colored in GENIE blue making it instantly recognizable as a GENIE product as well as making it easy to find. It is designed and engineered for rugged outdoor use in nearly any weather conditions. It is IPx4 water-resistant and Mil-STD-810 shock-tested.
